About the Lions Eye Institute

Since its establishment in 1983, the Lions Eye Institute has become a global centre for ophthalmological care and first-class scientific research into the prevention of blindness. In our 40-year history, we’ve had many successes and breakthroughs, including several world-first discoveries and inventions.

At the heart of our mission is helping prevent the devastating impact of vision loss and blindness. We do this by investing in medical research, world-class researchers, cutting-edge medical equipment and community programs, in the metropolitan and outback areas of Western Australia, and internationally (particularly supporting eye health programs in Indonesia).

Since the 1970s, Lions Clubs and Lions Sight-Save Foundation have been working in the regions of Western Australia to screen and detect people who may have eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and amblyopia.

Our commitment to support regional and remote communities with better access to eye health remains today, with the new Kimberley Eye Hub in Broome, outreach through the Lions Outback Vision Van and a vehicle to reach Kimberley communities closer to the Kimberley Hub. We also have a new private clinic in Midland and we are aspiring to open a public eye health clinic in Midland to service the eastern corridor in Perth and outlying regions towards the Wheatbelt.

We are a not-for-profit organisation that exists to help make people’s lives better through the saving of sight and we believe that all Australians should be able to access comprehensive and appropriate eye health care services, irrespective of where they may live.

Supporting our mission to prevent blindness and cure eye disease is a team of dedicated, internationally renowned researchers and clinicians, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, and an institute-wide commitment to excellence, innovation and best practice.
